About HUG
We know what you are going through and how you feel and we are here to help. Whether you are a mum, a dad, sibling, friend or family member, we will direct you to the information and support that you need.
A huge thank you to everyone who supports HUG!
The HUG community is growing fast and because of you, we have been able to do so much more to help anyone who needs support following the loss of a baby at any gestation.
So many of you have fundraised for HUG and it has made such a huge difference to so many people who are struggling following the loss of their baby. HUG is teaming up with Tommy’s, an amazing charity that focuses on pregnancy, babies and research projects focused on miscarriage and baby loss. They have a dedicated research centre and its ‘pioneering research begins to try and spare the heartbreak suffered by 1 in 4 couples.’ HUG is a huge supporter of Tommy’s and we hope to do great things together, not only to break the silence of baby loss, but to help so many others in the future.

Supporting Tommy’s
Who is Tommy’s and what do they do?
Tommy’s has been working to save babies lives for 25 years. In 1992, two obstetricians from St Thomas’ Hospital in London were frustrated by the lack of answers available for the women. Now, the charity they founded is the UK’s leading charity researching into the causes and prevention of baby loss. Sadly, 1 in 4 pregnancies will end in loss in the UK, causing untold heartbreak to parents and families.
Tommy’s raise funds to facilitate medical research into why babies are born too soon or lost in pregnancy and birth. Our researchers are working to find the answers and come up with solutions to save babies lives’ and protect families from the devastation that the loss of a baby causes.
We have four research centres across the UK dedicated to prematurity, miscarriage and stillbirth research. In April of 2016 we realised a longstanding ambition and opened our National Centre for Miscarriage Research, the largest of its kind in Europe.
As well as conducting pioneering research, Tommy’s provide a bespoke pregnancy information service offering information, advice and support to help women have the healthiest pregnancy possible. All of our information is certified by The Information Standard and informed by our team of midwives, who also run a free information line for pregnancy advice and bereavement support.
The page for Family and Friends is excellent as too often parents experience accidental insensitivity from those closest to them.
HUG is still pushing to get ‘HUG nurses’ on wards to identify them as somewhat bereavement trained. It is so sad that so many have had negative experiences at hospitals, with the majority being from the way bereaved parents are dealt with in insensitive manners. It has been a well-received idea and the NHS are positive about this. They recognise that there are issues with some staff and they need to be addressed. There’s a long way to go but at least we are in the right direction! A huge thank you to all the amazing, hard working doctors, midwives and nurses and everyone else on the team that do make such a difference to patient experience.
We really appreciate it, more than you will ever know!
The Grief Recovery Method
It is such a versatile method and has been around for 30 years. It is used in so many countries and is growing and growing. It gives you vital tools to help with coping with loss and is a very worthwhile programme (infact essential!) to look into if you are feeling ‘stuck’ or ‘lost’ following a loss. From someone who has been through counselling and being in a very dark place for a very long time, I can honestly say that The Grief Recovery Method changed my life. My anxiety dramatically reduced since completing the programme and I have learned to finally live my life again after losing my babies.
This method is used all over the country so there will be a Grief Recovery specialist near you. Email amy@helpusgrieve.co.uk with any questions or visit www.griefrecoverymethod.co.uk for more information about it. This method is so important to HUG in teaching staff at hospitals to use the tools themselves within their personal lives as well as applying some of the techniques to be more supportive and understanding to their patients, especially those who are experiencing trauma and loss.
If I could pause time, I would take every single one of you through this method. It doesn’t change what has happened, but it lets us breathe again and oh my goodness, we deserve it!
Lots of love, Amy xxx
HUG Remembrance Page
HUG understands the importance of the recognition of your baby. Unfortunately, most of us who lose a baby will not be offered to register their existence legally. We have decided to add a HUG remembrance page to honour our children who didn’t make it. Whether you lost your baby early or late in your pregnancy, you can register them for recognition at HUG.
It doesn’t matter if you have named your baby or not, nicknames and baby ‘surname’ will of course be included. Send your baby’s name/nickname and date to amy@helpusgrieve.co.uk and we will include your little treasure(s). If you would like to, you can of course leave a message for your baby which we will include.
